Preparation for a CT or CAT Scan:

Most CT Scan procedures take from 5 to 20 minutes. Some exams (CT scans with intravenous contrast) may require a blood test be done prior to the exam to make sure your kidney function is normal. CT scans of the Abdomen and Pelvis typically require you to pick up an oral barium solution to drink prior to the day of your exam. The barium solution comes with instructions on when to drink it. For our female patients it is important for us to know if there is any chance that you could possibly be pregnant.  Radiation to the fetus during pregnancy should be avoided whenever possible, especially during the first 3 months of pregnancy. You will be asked questions at the time of scheduling your appointment that will help us determine if your exam will require intravenous and or oral contrast.  Any necessary preparation for your exam will be explained to you at that time.
